MEN: HOW TO APPLY A FRAGRANCE AND EVERYTHING YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT FRAGRANCES

For most men, selecting a personal fragrance is eerily akin to picking out a piece of jewelry. The man has little idea what he’s doing or even where to even begin… other than looking within a specified price range. This general lack of olfactory knowledge is a shame, as the fragrance decision, while not on par with selecting a wife or career, does play a role in a man’s interactions, first impressions and confidence. So, with the importance of fragrance knowledge clearly making “scents” to you now, here’s everything you need to “nose” about fragrances (sorry).

WHAT IS A PERSONAL FRAGRANCE?

A personal fragrance is simply a mixture of essential oils and other good stuff blended together to create a scent significantly better than a person’s stripped-down body odor. In ye’ olden days, fragrances were used primarily by the wealthy to mask the B.O. (deodorants weren’t in vogue yet) resulting from infrequent bathing. So essentially, the whole fragrance industry was created to make sure certain folks didn’t reek.

THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF FRAGRANCES

Parfum, Cologne, EDT? How’s a gent to know the difference as they’re all things in cans that can be sprayed or dabbed on? Well, there is a difference and the variation lies in the product’s concentration. Concentration determines how strong the scent of the fragrance is and the stronger the concentration, the more intensely noticeable the fragrance is and the longer it will last on the body.
By and large, guys tend to “concentrate” less than women, using mostly Eau de Cologne (EdC). Here are the different types of fragrances and their respective concentration levels:

• Eau de Parfum (EdP): 10-20% (typical 15%)

• Eau de Toilette (EdT): 5-15% (typical 10%)

• Eau de Cologne (EdC): 3-8% (typical 5%)

• Splash and after shave: 1-3%

HOW TO TRIM YOUR BEARD

image

GROWING IT

Push Through The Crockett Phase: Obviously, the first step in growing any beard is to stop shaving. This can present an awkward few weeks (or months depending on your “sprouting level”) where co-workers and friends aren’t sure if you’re lazy, hung over or vying for a spot on Miami Vice III. Keep doubters on their toes by avoiding extreme cases of “neck beard” (hair between lines b. and c. on illustration). Remove these hairs with a quality trimmer or fresh blade.

Get Soft: The main reason men prematurely pull the plug on beard growth is averseness to itching. There’s a degree of this that’ll always be there, but softening immature whiskers with a beard wash and conditioner can help a beard mature easier throughout its lifespan.

MAINTAINING IT

Pamper Those Whiskers: Just like the hair on a man’s head, facial hair needs to be cared for to ensure it doesn’t get wiry, dry and offensive looking (unless that’s the goal). Having handsome facial hair can be accomplished by regularly washing and conditioning with targeted beard products and working out kinks and curls via regular facial exfoliation and a beard comb.

Outline A Perimeter
: Unless going for the 100% bohemian look, setting beard boundaries on your cheeks and neck is essential from the start. Make lines too tight and you look like a tight-wad or gang member, let them sprout too long and you’re in Haight-Ashbury territory. For the neck area, we recommend an inch or so below the actual jaw line (line b. on illustration) and for the cheeks, follow “smile lines” (line d. on illustration) up toward sideburns.

Hold The Line: Knowing where the beard ends is only half the battle. From there, one needs to effectively carve things out. Always use amirror to ensure balance and symmetry.

Get the perfect shave

image

Just as a golfer needs the right clubs and an artist needs a proper canvas, a well-groomed man needs the right shaving tools to achieve a nick, burn and bump-free ritual. Here they are:

1. Hot Water From Sink Or Shower

2. Targeted Facial Cleanser Or Exfoliator

3. Shave Oil

4. Shave Cream

5. Razor Of Choice

6. Post Shave Balm

The Shave

Step1 #: Prepare
Cleansing or exfoliating the face is the initial action in any great shave. Applying and rinsing off a targeted facial cleansing product before blade touch-down will eradicate excess grit, grime and waste. While a quality facial cleanser should be used most days, a facial scrubshould be substituted 2-3 times per week. Such scrubs will help remove dead skin cells and will also uproot stubborn ingrown hairs.

How To Grow A Beard Like A Celebrity

There was a time when growing a proper beard required only one thing – the face’s owner stopped shaving. Times have certainly evolved (or regressed depending how you view it) and beard maintenance now takes some actual effort to ensure said beard reflects one’s personality and facial-hair related goals. Here are some tips to creating and sustaining a great looking beard (even if you don’t have Brad Pitt’s or Ben Affleck’s beard budget):

● GROWING IT
Push Through The Crockett Phase: Obviously, the first step in growing any beard is to stop shaving.

Get Soft: The main reason men prematurely pull the plug on beard growth is adverseness to itching. There’s a degree of this that’ll always be there, but softening immature whiskers with a beard wash and conditioner can help a beard mature easier throughout its lifespan.
